I was on the edge of my seat as I read this. And I’m just over here applauding and cheering you on for all the life being lived in those terribly bitter temps (because they’ve kept me cozied up inside--and well, pretty lazy.) I got a treat with relief upon learning Lucky is doing well.
And yes, that cake stand definitely takes the cake.
Learning about calving season is bringing such joy to my January! Praise God that the little one is alive! Seriously thanks for writing these stories. They are fascinating.
I love your writing because you are able to put in words the kinds of scenarios that are normal for us too. We don’t calve until mid-March but we always get at least one snow storm (we’re in Canada). I’ve also been amazed at the timing of checks, a calf bawling, a movement in the corner of your eye, or just a feeling.
Thank you!! I'm so glad to hear that you can relate! (I always hope my words connect, so it's nice to hear when they do! So thank you for telling me.) 🤍 And yes, I feel like I had a sort of "feeling" that night when I didn't want to go out alone.
Thanks, Kym!! There have definitely been years I was not willing to do any night checks—when I still had babies/toddlers waking up and I wasn't about to get out of bed one more time. 😉
Just me tearing up about a cow over here. So glad you found it in time We had a litter of puppies due when the temps dropped all the sudden in October (they were not planned, but that’s a whole other story) and due to ranch housing policies we couldn’t have animals indoors (don’t get me started 😝) ... We spent a whole day jerry rigging heating solutions etc... for those dang puppies and I cannot tell you how many times I went to check on them in the middle of the night. My husband told me I’m never again allowed to have a pregnant animal while also pregnant myself. Apparently I over identify with the mother 😆. But there’s just something in that fierce need to protect the new & vulnerable, and weather is gonna weather. Here’s to hoping for no more crazy cold snaps while calving!!
Having grown up in partially the ranch culture....I felt each word.
BTW you are not an over thinker!
You are a process processer. It is a "from the heart" gifting in which God front loaded your DNA with the spark of conception.
In other words scripturally you are a dominant gift of mercy.
Kind of like a right or left handed dominant hand.
If led here is a chart which lists all of the scriptural truths about not only your dominant gift but the other 6 which we all get stuffed in to the conception package.
Can be a fun endeavor for you and the wise farmer as time permits.
If led hit us up for free copy of the indepth teaching that you both can do at home but probalay after calving season.
Thank you! And thanks for reading! I've been thinking about changing the name of my Substack, but haven't come up with the *right* name yet. I've been over thinking that. 😉
This was captivating. I’m so happy Lucky made it! I can’t wait to read more farm stories!!! Also, have you wrote about giving birth in a truck? If so-where can I find it?! And if not- please do! lol
I just loved this story so much, Stacy!! And the pictures as always <3
Thanks, Molly!! 💛

Thanks, Jenny!! 💛 It’s almost 60° today, so we are enjoying the sunshine! (The cows too!!)
This read like a suspense novel! I retold my husband the entire story.
Thanks, Alyssa!!
Your frozen hair--that’s wild! So glad the timing worked out just right for Lucky!
Thanks for reading, Laura!!
Oh my goodness Stacy my heart was in my chest the whole time I was reading!!! Love your farm stories. Thank you for sharing them!
Thanks so much!! 💛
Beautiful, Stacy! I felt I was right along with you.
Thank you, Adrienne!! 🤍

I love these farm stories and I cannot imagine such cold weather! And I can't imagine getting out of bed for cows as well as your own kids 😴😂
Thanks, Kym!! There have definitely been years I was not willing to do any night checks—when I still had babies/toddlers waking up and I wasn't about to get out of bed one more time. 😉
Haha 😅 it's amazing what we can push ourselves to do and what we can handle though! I'm guessing on a farm, it's just got to be done!
Yes, exactly!!
I was glued to this story, wanting to find out what happened to the baby calf!
Thanks for reading, Wendy!! ❤️
Gosh I love your farm tales.
Thanks, Krista! ❤️❤️

Yes, there definitely is that primal instinct!! Thanks for reading, Annelise!!

Thanks, Dani! Yes, I have -- a couple of times! :) I wrote the story on my blog shortly after her birth (with photos from a birth photographer!). https://www.stacybronec.com/blog/2020/07/24/the-birth-of-nora-kate
And I had an essay on C+C about it too. https://www.coffeeandcrumbs.net/blog/2022/6/9/in-good-hands
I've read your c+c essay but not your blog post and those birth photos... Man 😭😍 so beautiful! And you are amazing for having a baby in a car! 😳
Thank you, Kym!! 🤍 I'm so grateful I had hired a birth photographer! Even though she missed the birth, I love the photos she captured that day.
Oh I just went and read your birth story! How incredible! I cried of course. Love your honest writing. It’s beautiful.
Thank you!! That's so kind of you to say -- I really appreciate it. (Her birth still feels a little surreal sometimes, nearly four years later.) ❤️
Yes this is just what I was looking for! Thank youuuuu!!
❤️
I was on the edge of my seat reading this. Glad the calf is okay! Thanks for this peek into farmlife, which I'm sadly pretty ignorant of.
Thanks for reading, Lauren!! ❤️
I automatically smiled when I saw an email with your latest writing ❤️ loved reading it! That was one heck of a cold snap!
Thanks, Tanna! It was cold! I'm sure you all saw similar temps!
