I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading this! I can't even imagine this being a regular occurrence. So relieved that Lucky made himself known.

Last winter - I believe it was the night before Christmas Eve, 2022 - we had some crazy cold temperatures (similar to yours, -35ish with windchill), and I woke my 25-year-old son in the middle of the night to help me go check on the chickens. We bundled up and ran out in the pitch-black yard to peek through the coop door....and there they all were, sound asleep just like always. It didn't occur to me at the time that I had no actual plan for what to do if they were in distress, nor would I even be able to tell if they were in distress...they could just as easily have been frozen to death as asleep, and I wouldn't know until the next day. Somehow the "checking" made me feel better, like I'd done something - even though I'd done nothing! I was able to get back to sleep after that, though.

One of our roosters had frostbite on his comb after that, but none of the rest of them were worse for wear. Crazy the kind of weather conditions they can withstand.

I was on the edge of my seat as I read this. And I’m just over here applauding and cheering you on for all the life being lived in those terribly bitter temps (because they’ve kept me cozied up inside--and well, pretty lazy.) I got a treat with relief upon learning Lucky is doing well.

And yes, that cake stand definitely takes the cake.

This read like a suspense novel! I retold my husband the entire story.

I love your writing because you are able to put in words the kinds of scenarios that are normal for us too. We don’t calve until mid-March but we always get at least one snow storm (we’re in Canada). I’ve also been amazed at the timing of checks, a calf bawling, a movement in the corner of your eye, or just a feeling.

Just me tearing up about a cow over here. So glad you found it in time We had a litter of puppies due when the temps dropped all the sudden in October (they were not planned, but that’s a whole other story) and due to ranch housing policies we couldn’t have animals indoors (don’t get me started 😝) ... We spent a whole day jerry rigging heating solutions etc... for those dang puppies and I cannot tell you how many times I went to check on them in the middle of the night. My husband told me I’m never again allowed to have a pregnant animal while also pregnant myself. Apparently I over identify with the mother 😆. But there’s just something in that fierce need to protect the new & vulnerable, and weather is gonna weather. Here’s to hoping for no more crazy cold snaps while calving!!

TY for sharing your heart & writing.

Having grown up in partially the ranch culture....I felt each word.

BTW you are not an over thinker!

You are a process processer. It is a "from the heart" gifting in which God front loaded your DNA with the spark of conception.

In other words scripturally you are a dominant gift of mercy.

Kind of like a right or left handed dominant hand.

If led here is a chart which lists all of the scriptural truths about not only your dominant gift but the other 6 which we all get stuffed in to the conception package.

Can be a fun endeavor for you and the wise farmer as time permits.

If led hit us up for free copy of the indepth teaching that you both can do at home but probalay after calving season.

I was on the edge of my seat reading this. Glad the calf is okay! Thanks for this peek into farmlife, which I'm sadly pretty ignorant of.
